The FBI has provided notice to the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management of two recently identified scams, each targeting college and university personnel and students.  Please review the details of these scams provided below, and notify the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.IC3.gov if you experience either of these activities.

The first scam involves individuals contacting students electronically and offering the opportunity to make money working at home.  The scammer requests the student’s bank account information, claiming it is for the purpose of direct depositing their pay.  However, the money that is deposited has been acquired through other illegal activities and is only being funneled through the student’s account before ultimately ending up in other accounts for the scammer.  For additional details, please see http://www.nccpsafety.org/assets/images/as_standard_image/ScamsTargetingUniversityStudents_1-2015.pdf.

The second scam targets college and university employees, with the scammer contacting them and claiming that a change in their human resources status requires them to log in to their employer’s HR page.  They are provided with a link to a fraudulent page that simulates the appearance of the actual HR page for their institution, which then captures their log-in information.  This information is used to access the individual’s actual HR self-service account and change the account their pay is deposited to.  For additional details, please see http://www.nccpsafety.org/assets/images/as_standard_image/UniversityEmployeePayroll_scam_1-2015.pdf.

Again, if experiencing either of these activities, the FBI requests that you notify them at ic3.gov.
