Engaging Communities Luncheon 2015: Guest Speaker, Melissa Harris-Perry: Limited amount of seats availableContributed by Michelle Rios-Dominguez on 02/08/15 The 6th annual Engaging Communities Luncheon event will be held on Monday, February 23, 2015, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. in the Emerson Suites. This year’s event promises to be really special as we explore the notion of citizenship with guest speaker, Melissa Harris-Perry. Melissa Harris-Perry is a columnist at The Nation and host of MSNBC’s “Melissa Harris-Perry." She is also Presidential Endowed Chair in Politics and International Affairs at Wake Forest University, her alma mater and where she is also director of the Anna Julia Cooper Center on Gender, Race, and Politics in the South. She has previously service on the faculties of the University of Chicago, Princeton University and Tulane University. Harris-Perry is author of Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America, which argues that persistent harmful stereotypes profoundly shape black women’s politics, contribute to policies that treat them unfairly, and make it difficult for black women to assert their rights in the political arena. We hope that you can participate in this community-building event and help to shape the culture around you. To register for this event, please complete a rsvp form on the following page: https://www.ithaca.edu/hr/engagingcommunities/. This event is free and open to all members of the Ithaca College community and is anticipated to sellout seats quickly. Lunch will be served and a sign language interpreter will be available. Persons with disabilities who anticipate needing accommodations or who have questions about physical access may submit an RSVP form in advance of the luncheon and indicate what type of accommodation is needed.
