Jorge Villavicencio Grossmann (School of Music) wins Fulbright Scholar AwardContributed by Craig Cummings on 02/16/15 Associate professor Jorge Villavicencio Grossmann was awarded a Fulbright grant to conduct creative work in Valencia, Spain, in late spring and summer of 2016. Grossmann will be in residence at the Conservatorio Superior de Música Salvador Seguí in Castellón, (Valencia) Spain, where he will collaborate with faculty and students. He will compose a new piece for voice and chamber ensemble based on poems by Valencian 15th-century author Ausiàs March. The Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries, and it is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. As Fulbright grantee, Grossmann will join the ranks of distinguished participants in the program. Fulbright alumni have become heads of state, judges, ambassadors, cabinet ministers, CEOs, and university presidents, as well as leading journalists, artists, scientists, and teachers. They have been awarded 53 Nobel Prizes. Since its beginnings in 1946, more than 360,000 Fulbrighters have participated in the Program. Grossmann’s music has been performed around the world by renowned orchestras, soloists and ensembles. This past year, his orchestral works received performances by the National Symphony Orchestra of Argentina, Peruvian National Symphony (premiere of his piano concerto), and Bogotá Philharmonic. In October, Grossmann participated as guest composer in the Festival Latinoamericano de Música in Caracas, Venezuela. His work Notus was performed by one of Venezuela’s top youth orchestras, the Orquesta Sinfónica Teresa Carreño, a part of Venezuela’s renowned national music education program, El Sistema. Grossmann, a former Guggenheim fellow, has received awards from the Fromm Foundation, the Aaron Copland Award, Bogliasco Foundation, MacDowell Colony, Aspen Music Festival, and American Academy of Arts and Letters.
