Ellie Fitts Fulmer to present at the Faculty Colloquium on Thursday, March 5, 2015Contributed by MaryAnn Taylor on 02/27/15 Submitted on behalf of Linda Petrosino, Interim Provost Please join me on Thursday, March 5, 2015 for the second Faculty Colloquium for the spring semester. Dr. Ellie Fitts Fulmer, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of education in her second year at IC. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Literacy and Social Studies, and supervises student teachers in elementary schools throughout the greater Ithaca area. Dr. Fulmer’s recent scholarship includes The Race Comedy Project, which is currently enrolling participants for focus groups beginning in March.
She will be presenting, “More than a Laugh: Racial Comedy’s Contributions for Multicultural Education”. Does racial comedy simultaneously delight and perplex you? Are there learning moments embedded within this form of entertainment? Assistant Professor of Education, Dr. Ellie Fitts Fulmer, will present the emergent findings from her research studies into racial comedy as a teaching tool for multicultural education. Conducted together with Dr. Nia Makepeace, also Education, the two have written about their experience teaching an IC course where racial comedy came to be a central feature in students' learning. Their current project, a focus group study, seeks to understand the affordances and tensions inherent in using racial comedy in teaching. This talk will feature audience engagement with racial comedy clips and productive conversations about the potential for student learning. The IC Faculty Colloquium, launched in 2012, is a monthly event designed to provide a forum for faculty to share with one another their scholarly and creative work. This is a chance for people across department and school lines to learn more about the exciting pursuits of their colleagues and to engage with one another as members of a common learning community. The Colloquium will take place from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in the Clark Lounge of the Campus Center. The first half-hour will be a social time during which we will enjoy wine, appetizers, and excellent conversation. The presentation and Q&A will be from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. I look forward to seeing you there!
