It is that time of year again when picnics, receptions and banquets are held to celebrate the completion of the academic year, students’ accomplishments, and Commencement. Many times, such events take place off campus, at private homes, and other locations. If alcohol will be available for students in attendance, it is important to remember the responsibilities that are associated with such an event. If you are advising a student group, or working with a group which is planning an event, there are some important considerations which should be addressed. It is imperative that you uphold the laws which state that alcohol must not be served to anyone under the age of 21 and that it is illegal to serve individuals of legal drinking age who are intoxicated. As officials of the College, it is our responsibility to prevent such occurrences. A faculty or staff member who is involved in the sponsorship or supervision of an event places both him/herself and the institution in jeopardy should the law be broken at that event. This could result in serious liability problems. If you are connected with an event at which alcohol will be served, it is absolutely essential that measures be taken to identify individuals who are not of legal drinking age and to be certain that they are not served. Food and non-alcoholic beverages must also be available at the event. Further details concerning alcohol at College functions, College policies, and guidelines for sponsoring a safe and responsible event are contained in the Student Conduct Code, located in the Policy Manual, which can be found at https://www.ithaca.edu/policies/vol7/general/070102/. Please contact the Office of Student Affairs and Campus Life (274-3374) if you have any questions. This is an exciting time of year. Individuals should be proud of their achievements and be recognized for them. As we participate in these end-of-the-year celebrations, please be mindful of the above and take all necessary precautions to prevent any unpleasant results to this happy occasion. Best wishes for a safe and pleasant end to an excellent year. Thank you. |
