With the recent completion of testing and patching of the Parnassus system for compatibility with Java 8, most people can now safely upgrade to Java 8 (on both Windows and Mac college computers). However, there are still a few exceptions.

People who create reports in Discoverer or BI Publisher should continue to decline the Java 8 upgrade prompt. People who simply view or run reports through Argus CAN upgrade to Java 8.

For both Windows and Mac, the Java upgrade will attempt to install the unnecessary Ask Toolbar. To prevent the Ask Toolbar installation for this and future Java upgrades, follow these simple steps to upgrade Java:

  • Open the Control Panel (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac) and then open the item called Java.
  • Click the Update tab
  • Click Update Now and follow the installation prompts. Watch carefully for the screen offering to install the Ask Toolbar, and uncheck any options related to it.
  • When the installation is complete...
  • Open the Control Panel (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac) and then open the item called Java.
  • Click the Advanced tab
  • Scroll to the bottom of the window and check the option for "Suppress sponsor offers when installing or updating Java", then click Apply

At this time, the latest version is Java 8 Update 40. Unless announced otherwise, users can safely install future updates to Java 8 as prompted.
