Exercise and Sport Sciences Guest Speaker - Dr. Tim ButterfieldContributed by Deborah L. King on 04/16/15 Timothy Butterfield, PhD ATC, associate professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Kentucky, is presenting “Massage à Trois: Uncovering the mechanism of massage efficacy using three research models” on Thursday April 23rd at 7 pm in Hill 104. The talk is free and open to the public. Dr. Butterfield’s area of research is muscle mechanics, specifically strain-induced muscle injury. His clinical interest lies in muscle adaptation to stress and the roles of inflammation in muscle damage and growth. In his research, Dr. Butterfield explores the potential role of muscle fiber dynamics and force production during eccentric and concentric exercise on muscle damage and functional adaptation. His models include in-vivo ambulation and exercise models that allow direct, real time measurements of muscle mechanical properties and performance. An understanding of the biomechanical properties of the muscle allows clinicians the opportunity to maximize the rehabilitation protocol to assure timely therapeutic intervention without causing further injury. Dr. Butterfield's presentation is sponsored by The Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences and the Alpha Eta Society.
