“You Can’t Take It With You,” by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart, was first performed in 1936 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937. Seeing a play that is almost 80 years old might be confusing at times, but junior Theatre Studies major Danica Kelly can help with that. Kelly is the assistant director of “You Can’t Take It With You,” the final show of IC Theatre’s season. As part of her duties, Kelly researched many of the references made in the show that are mysteries to audiences in 2015. Kelly has condensed her research into the dramaturg notes that are featured in the play’s program. These notes give us a glimpse into the 1930s New York City that the play’s characters inhabit.

For example, did you know that the title “Grand Duke” or “Grand Duchess” was a prestigious title given only to the Russian emperor’s siblings, children, and grandchildren? Are you fuzzy on the details of the kidnapping of Baby Charles Lindberg III or the origin of the phrase “G-Men”? Who were Anna Pavlova and Grigori Rasputin? Kelly’s list of fun facts educate audiences as they wait for the curtain to rise.
