CERTAIN QUESTIONS NEVER GET OLD AND NEVER GO AWAY:

  • Why are there state governments in the first place?
  • Are states really necessary for human thriving?
  • Can the enormous power held by states be justified or not?
  • What does freedom for the individual citizen mean in the shadow of such state power?
  • What is the source of the individual citizen’s political obligation to the state and other citizens?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of a democratic form of government?
  • What does justice require regarding the distribution of wealth between rich and poor, and why should we care?

These questions form the core of a course in POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY being offered in Fall 2015 by the Philosophy Department (PHIL 22000, TR 2:35-3:50).

We have seats available. All interested students are welcome.
