Sherry Deckman (Education) recently published a jointly-authored article, “Caricature and Hyperbole in Preservice Teacher Professional Development for Diversity,” in Urban Education (with Mica Pollock, UC San Diego, Candice Bocala, WestEd, and Shari Dickstein-Staub, National Center for Teacher Residences). The article explores a key challenge in professional development for educators focused on racial diversity. Namely, participants may hear unreasonable demands in professional development leaders’ requests to address inequality and limited opportunity in under-resourced schooling contexts. The article goes on to argue that these caricatures require direct acknowledgement by both preservice teachers and teacher educators working in diverse contexts.
