Woizero Jarvis, an incoming first-year HEOP and CSTEP student, was invited to attend the Beating the Odds Summit at the White House on July 23rd.   The Summit was part of the White House Reach Higher initiative by First Lady Michelle Obama.

The Summit brought together college-bound high school graduates from the class of 2015 from all over the country for a celebratory, engaging, and informative event on how to be successful in college and beyond.  The Office of the First Lady acknowledges that Woizero was one of 130 students from around the country selected to participate in the Summit, which was aimed at preparing young people for their future academic journeys.  Ultimately, the goal of the summit was to give students the basic tools they need to succeed at the next level.

Woizero, nominated by the Harlem RBI - a community based year-round youth development organization located in Harlem, New York, is currently attending the Ithaca College Summer Institute for incoming first-year HEOP students until August 1st.  The Summer Institute is a four to five week required residential program that provides a prefreshman with a valuable and exciting preview of intensive and rigorous coursework at Ithaca College.  Incoming first-year HEOP and CSTEP students also learn to collaborate with each other as they adjust to the demands, creativity, and expectations of higher education at Ithaca College.

Woizero remains very grateful to have been invited to the potential once in a lifetime event at the White House.  She also expressed being excited about the learning opportunities that await her at Ithaca College, as a participant in both HEOP and CSTEP over the next four years.
