Matthew Holtmeier Writes on El Norte for National Film Archive

An expanded essay on El Norte (1983) by Matthew Holtmeier, Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in Screen Studies, was recently published by the Library of Congress for its list of films inducted into the National Film Archive. Holtmeier was invited to write for his expertise on political film, independent cinema, and peripheral subjects.

His essay identifies El Norte as an important early independent film that situates director Gregory Nava and co-writer Anna Thomas as pioneers of independent cinema in the United States.

His essay can be found at: http://www.loc.gov/programs/static/national-film-preservation-board/documents/el_norte.pdf

The National Film Archive list of films, and other expanded essays, can be found at: http://www.loc.gov/programs/national-film-preservation-board/film-registry/complete-national-film-registry-listing/descriptions-and-essays/
