“Karel Husa’s Landscapes: A Music Theory Perspective”Contributed by Mark A. Radice on 08/20/15 Using primary-source documents in IC's Karel Husa Archive & Gallery, Stephen Gomez-Peck will share his work and findings on Karel Husa’s Landscapes—from Husa’s innovative compositional techniques to experiencing independent research for the first time, to getting to know Karel Husa as a human being. Czech-born composer Karel Husa’s relationship with Ithaca College dates back to 1967 when he began as a professor of composition after moving to Ithaca to join Cornell University’s music faculty in 1954. Mr. Husa found his compositional niche through the 1960s, culminating in a Pulitzer Prize in 1969 for his String Quartet No. 3. His subsequent compositions, including his most significant contribution to the Brass Quintet repertoire Landscapes (1977), demonstrate refinement and confidence in his unique artistic style. This event also marks the unveiling of a new exhibit in the Husa Gallery of the same title as the presentation. Start off the semester by learning about a figure of IC’s community who is known and admired throughout the musical world! Refreshments will be served following the presentation. Date: Wednesday, September 2nd Time: 4:00-4:30 p.m. Where: Husa Gallery, Whalen School of Music. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Mark A. Radice at mradice@ithaca.edu or (607) 274-1367. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible. |
