The Associate Provost for Student Life and the Associate Provost for Diversity, Inclusion and Engagement would like to invite Ithaca College faculty and staff to participate in an upcoming on-line Symposium entitled:  Fulfilling Our Promises to Students:  Fostering and Demonstrating Student Learning and Success.  This event will take place on September 29 from 1-5 pm in the A&E VIP Room.

This live-virtual event brings higher education thought leaders and professionals together using online technology and local in-person discussion groups.  The topics will focus on the ways student affairs professionals foster student learning and success and how we can demonstrate this impact.  This national event is sponsored by ACPA - College Student Educators International.

Ithaca College will be participating in this event which will take place live on September 29 from 1-5pm in the Athletic and Events Center VIP Room.

The schedule for the event is as follows:

1:00pm – 1:15pm: Introduction/Setting the Stage 

This time will be spent to set up the symposium and provide an overview. Topics to be covered will be connection to last year’s symposium, why this topic, goals for the day and beyond, and how the day will work.

1:15pm – 1:45pm: Why higher education must focus on student learning and development (recorded/Skype mini talks 8-10 minutes – 2 talks)

The goal of this module is to provide different viewpoints why student affairs must focus on learning. The speakers below can put the conversation in a larger context connecting to national agendas, trends, and issues

1:45pm – 2:15pm: Student affairs’ unique contribution to student learning and success (recorded/Skype mini talks 15 minutes – 2 talks)

Shaun Harper, Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education & Jillian Kinzie, Center for Postsecondary Research & NSSE Institute

The goal of this section is to be able to articulate how student affairs contributes to this learning conversation and how we need to leverage that impact. This will provide a basis of what folks should focus on documenting in regard to impact on student learning and success.

2:15pm – 3:00pm: Campus Conversation: “How do we contribute to student learning and success.” In small groups at satellite locations discuss this topic and share your brainstorm list in a virtual space set up for the symposium

3:15pm – 3:30pm: Break

3:30pm – 4:00pm: Successful documentation of student learning.

What is being done and how can we improve as a field (recorded/Skype mini talks minutes – 2 talks)

4:00pm – 4:45pm: Campus Conversation: “In what ways are you doing well in documenting student learning and how can you do better?” This conversation will be broader and what units and individuals can do to improve how document student learning to tell the story of their impact on students. In addition to discussion, the campus teams develop a list of action steps/commitments to make to move forward.

4:45pm – 5:00pm: Wrap up and highlight a few action steps from the campus conversations
