Understanding Pediatric Feeding Challenges One Bite at a TimeContributed by Kimberly Wilkinson on 09/09/15 The Occupational Therapy Department presents special guest speaker for four free short workshops on challenges related to feeding and eating for kids with special needs. Monday, Sept. 14 in Emerson Suites A. Students, faculty, and community members are encouraged to attend. Pediatric feeding challenges are complex and families may benefit from support from many disciplines, including occupational therapy. Julie Miller, MOT, OTR/L, SWC writes, consults, and speaks internationally on helping families with children who have feeding challenges and limited diets. She is the head of occupational therapy and coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Feeding Team at Professional Child Development Associates in Pasadena, CA. Ms. Miller specializes in working with children with autism and those transitioning from being fed by gastrostomy tube. Ms. Miller will be presenting four topically oriented talks on Monday, September 14th, 2015 in Emerson Suites, A. Topics and schedule are listed below. Faculty, Students, and interested community members are welcome to attend all or part of this free workshop. Workshop Schedule: 8:30-9:00 Registration 9:00-10:00 Session 1--Introduction to Feeding-Topics include: General Development, Safety and Swallowing 10:15-11:15 Session 2--Occupational Therapy's Role in Feeding Support--Topics include: Descriptions and roles of other professionals involved in feeding, applying the OT practice framework, and sensory/motor information. 11:30-1:00 Lunch on your own 1:00-2:00 Session 3--Autism and Feeding--Topics include: Diagnosis, sensory needs, regulation, and engagement. 2:15-3:30 Session 4--Tips and tools to support intervention--This session will include hands-on activities related to feeding children with special needs. 3:30-4:00 Questions and wrap-up Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Kimberly Wilkinson at kwilkinson@ithaca.edu or (607) 274-1975.
