Matt Clum (Environmental Science '15) won the student paper competition at the Annual Meeting of the Middle States Association of American Geographers this past weekend in Binghamton, NY.  His paper is titled: "HABITAT PREFERENCE OF RAINBOW TROUT (Oncorhynchus mykiss) DURING SPAWNING MIGRATION IN A HEADWATER STREAM".

A lifelong fisherman, Matt recently turned his interest into a research project.  Working with Jake Brenner and others in the Student Intern Training Program of Ithaca College Natural Lands (ICNL), Matt designed and carried out his research in Van Buskirk Creek on the Robinson Family Preserve, one of the ICNL reserves located in the nearby Town of Newfield.  Matt's work showed in unprecedented detail how this natural, free-flowing stream provides as a safe haven for trout during spawning.  The results suggest that protecting and restoring wild streams could boost local trout populations and benefit the trout fishery in the Finger Lakes Region.
