Barbara Johnson speaks on Jewish Women's Folksongs from Kerala, South India at the Ascher Endowment Celebration on Sunday, October 18, 2015, at 3:15 pm in Emerson Suites.Contributed by Rebecca Lesses on 10/11/15 Dr. Johnson, emerita professor of Anthropology at Ithaca College, will be speaking during a celebration of the lives of the late Marcia Ascher (former professor of Mathematics at Ithaca College) and Robert Ascher (former professor of Anthropology at Cornell). Dr. Johnson's talk, in honor of Bob's and Marcia's many ethnographic interests, introduces "Cochini" women in India and Israel who have sung and preserved their Jewish songs in the Malayalam language for many generations. The celebration is sponsored by the Ithaca Area United Jewish Community to honor Robert and Marcia Ascher, who have generously bequeathed an endowment to the IAUJC for use on local projects. The event is cosponsored by the Jewish Studies program at Ithaca College and Hillel at Ithaca College. There will be exhibits focusing on both Marcia's and Bob's professional work, including Bob's animated films and sculptures, and Marcia's work on ethnomathematics.
