Nov. 2 in Williams 323, 7pmContributed by Harriet Malinowitz on 10/19/15 "SHATTERING MYTHICAL REPRESENTATIONS OF ARAB WOMEN IN MEDIA" - a talk by guest lecturer NOURA HAJJAJ of Marist College on Monday, November 2 in Williams 323 - will examine the complex representations of Arab women in both Arab and western media outlets in the aftermath of the pre-planned creation of a new Middle East by the George W. Bush administration - and the subsequent formation of ISIS across the Arab region. Against the backdrop of cultural history – artifacts ranging from Rudolph Valentino movies to Arab soap operas - this talk will reveal tactical patterns in the ways Arab women are depicted in traditional media channels such as newspapers, magazines, and mass media, and then via social media networks as well as within the entertainment industry.
