Elijah Breton (class of 2016) and Timothy Johnson (Professor of Music Theory) will present a lecture on cultural and social aspects of music in football (or soccer) and baseball on Monday, October 26, at 5pm (2105 Whalen Center for Music). Musically-Based Cultural and Social Connections between Players and Fans: At Monday’s lecture each presenter will give a short talk, illustrated by video and audio examples. Elijah Breton will discuss social and cultural implications of fan singing in British football. Dr. Timothy Johnson will discuss similar aspects of player-chosen music played as hitters walk up to the plate or pitchers enter a game in baseball. Afterward, the two presenters will discuss their collaborative work on the Dana Internship and answer questions from the audience. Anyone with an interest in sports or music, or both (or neither), is invited to attend. Elijah, a double major in Sport Studies and Communications Studies, previously presented at the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Conference in New Orleans and at the Whalen Symposium, where he was an award finalist. This past summer he received a Dana Internship from Ithaca College for his continued work on his football-music project, and to assist Dr. Johnson with his research on music and baseball. Dr. Johnson has published a book and two articles on music and baseball and has given ten conference presentations on the subject, including six at the Baseball Hall of Fame. He received the Sporting News-SABR Award for Baseball Research for his book, Baseball and the Music of Charles Ives: A Proving Ground (Scarecrow 2004). This event is free and open to the public.
