Resistance is a matter driven by the force of collective momentum. In a Chicago neighborhood, Mothers of Color are intervening in gun violence through community mediation. In Bed-Stuy Brooklyn, LGBT people of color are working with small businesses to develop safe havens from violence. In Atlanta, Trans people are building alternative models within the criminal justice system for diverting arrests and decreasing jail time. In a political landscape where oppressed communities often cannot rely on police or the state to keep us safe, community based safety strategies are essential to survival and resistance.

For the past 6 years Che Johnson-Long has been working in communities of color to cultivate existing cultural practices in order to expand the Transformative Justice Framework. In this interview-style presentation, she will explore how state sanctioned sites of violence push back on sovereignty through tools of isolation such as the Prison Industrial Complex. She will also explore the social construction of ‘Community’ as a tool for collective self determination.
