The ABC'S of Diabetes

Contributed by Katie Sack on 11/27/15

This November, we hope you increased your knowledge about diabetes. There are important changes to make, on both a local and national scale. Each individual is responsible for their own personal health, and we encourage you to make choices and changes that are healthy for you! Whether it means altering eating habits, exercise routines, or a schedule of doctor appointments, there are always ways to make healthy changes.

Need an easy way to remember wellness tips for preventing diabetes and heart complications? Just think of the ABCs!

  • A is for the A1C test.  This is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar (glucose) level over the past three months.
  • B is for Blood pressure.
  • C is for Cholesterol.
  • S is for stopping smoking.

Keep track of your ABCs by asking your doctor to test your A1C, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. These are usually tracked during regular well visits anyway! Your heart health and diabetes health will thank you.

Does information about diabetes interest you? The Centers for Disease Control in the U.S. has compiled a comprehensive site, providing data about diabetes on both state and national levels. Check out this link to learn more: National Data on Diabetes.
