The Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management is providing notice of a fraud scheme that has been reported as targeting students at several colleges and universities.  Please be aware if you encounter something similar that it is not legitimate and report specifics to the Office of Public Safety at 607-274-3333.

Per the current FBI investigation, in this scheme a notice is posted to a college or university's job board offering an employment opportunity.  The "employer" offers an advance payment to the student applicant, with the student then instructed to deposit funds into another account for equipment and materials related to the job opportunity.  However, the advance is paid with a check from a stolen account number and the payment does not ultimately clear for the student, while the funds the student deposits to the second account are lost to the fraud perpetrator.

Instances of this fake job posting have been found posted to the job boards of multiple institutions.  Company names provided as the supposed employer have included Jellybeads, LDC Charities, and Belview Farms.  The contact names for the employer have varied, but frequently use the name Jeremy McCrossin.  Contact phone numbers the employer has provided have been 701-491-7202 and 641-924-4533.

Again, if you encounter a job posting matching similar details, do not participate and report your observations to the Office of Public Safety.
