Dr. Andrew Utterson recently delivered a paper at the Sixth International Conference on the Image, held at the University of California, Berkeley, where this year’s special theme was “Media Materiality: Towards Critical Economies of ‘New’ Media.”

In a presentation entitled “Mapping the Movie Theater as Haunted Landscape,” Utterson analyzed cinematic representations of the movie theater (including films by Abbas Kiarostami and Tsai Ming-liang) and charted the altered historicity and meanings that have become associated with this site as a physical and symbolic locus of a changing film culture.
