JWST 29400 (offered Tuesday/Thursdays 2:35-3:50) asks big questions about Jewish identity in the world today.

What does it mean to be Jewish today? Are Jews a race, a religion, an ethnicity, or something else? Where do Jews belong in the American racial system? How has hatred of Jews affected Jewish identity? Is there a special way of being a Jewish man or woman? How do transgender Jews experience their Judaism? Is Israeli Jewish identity different from American Jewish identity?

The course engages with contemporary Jewish identity by focusing on these four topics:

  • Jews and race
  • Jewish identity after the Holocaust
  • Jewish identity in Israel
  • Gender, feminism, and queer identity

If these questions interest you, please sign up!

This is an ICC course: Diversity; Identities; Power and Justice; Humanities.

For more information, please contact Rebecca Lesses, coordinator of the Jewish Studies program at rlesses@ithaca.edu.
