Dr. Bhavani Arabandi selected as Research Fellow in Transnational Asian Studies

Bhavani Arabandi, Assistant Professor of Sociology, has been selected as the Annette and Hugh Gragg Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Transnational Asian Studies at the Chao Center for Asian Studies (CCAS) at Rice University. This Research Fellowship, from January-December 2016, will provide Dr. Arabandi with an opportunity to focus on her research and writing, and participate in the Center’s Transnational Asia Research Initiative (TARI) leading to a public seminar.

Dr. Arabandi has two principle thematic areas within which she conducts research: the impact of outsourcing on emerging economies; and the durability of gender inequalities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. In the first, she explores how individuals identify and negotiate new opportunities and uncertainties as nation-states re-organize policies, rights, regulations, and resources in response to changing markets in the global economy. The field research she conducts examines the impact of globalization of services and outsourcing on the changing demands of work and family in India. In her second area, she is building on her Fulbright work to explore gender inequalities in STEM education and the decreasing labor force participation of women in STEM careers in India and the U.S., using a comparative transnational framework.
