5th Annual Wheels for Women Cabaret to Benefit Domestic Violence Victims in IndiaContributed by Kathleen Mulligan on 01/20/16 The graduating class of Musical Theatre and Acting majors of the Department of Theatre Arts will present an evening of song, dance, and poetry on Sunday, January 31 at 7 PM in the Clark Theatre to benefit the residents of the Sakhi Shelter for victims of domestic violence in Kerala, India.
Wheels for Women is a organization created by Associate Professor Kathleen Mulligan and husband David Studwell after Mulligan's Fulbright to India in 2010. Funds raised from the cabaret go towards the training and licensing of residents as auto rickshaw drivers: offering women a path towards financial independence and away from their abusers. To date, Wheels for Women has purchased two new auto rickshaws for the shelter and trained and licensed nearly twenty residents as rickshaw drivers. The cabaret will last about 75 minutes with intermission. A raffle for local theatre tickets and an auction for a homemade pie will also help to raise funds. Suggested donation: $10.00 ($5.00 for students) For further information, please contact Kathleen Mulligan at kmulligan@ithaca.edu Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Kathleen Mulligan at kmulligan@ithaca.edu or (607) 274-3927. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible. |
