CSCRE BEYOND COMMUNITY DISCUSSION SERIES EVENT: CULINARY COMMONALITIES ON MARCH 3, 2016Contributed by Penny Bogardus on 03/01/16 You are invited to join us for the second Spring CSCRE Discussion Series Event on Thursday, March 3, 2016, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Klingenstein Lounge. Admission is FREE and open to the IC campus community and the general public. Dr. Opie will be discussing Food and Social Movements in NYC's Black and Brown Communities. His book, Upsetting the Apple Cart delves into the role that food plays in social movements. The book shows that dating back to the 1960s, Black and Latino activists had been engaged in movements to increase the number of Black and Latino students, faculty, and administrators on college campuses; end police brutality; and pressure officials to be more democratic and transparent about their policies. Upsetting the Apple Cart demonstrates the ways in which officials talk about painful incidents. They view the cause and response to problems through a historical memory which are unpacked in the book.
