CSCRE DISCUSSION SERIES SPRING 2016: BEYOND COMMUNITY PRESENTS: FRACTURED UNITY AND STUDENT MOVEMENTSContributed by Penny Bogardus on 03/31/16 ALL ARE WELCOME TO JOIN DR. GUSTAVO LICON ON TUESDAY, APRIL 5, 2016, FROM 7:00 - 9:00 PM IN KLINGENSTEIN LOUNGE FOR THIS INFORMATIVE EVENT. ADMISSION IS FREE. Reading casually about the student movements of the past, it is easy to assume those leaders and foot soldiers lived in simpler times, when singular identities and issues galvanized the masses to fight for justice. In fact, as Dr. Gustavo Licón discovered in his own research, communities dealt with as many internal contradictions then as now. In an interactive Q&A format, Dr. Licón will talk about the "fractured unity" that existed during the Chicano Movement of the 1970's, as well as all student movements in general, and how activists socially constructed and negotiated a fragile common ground that was constantly shifting beneath their feet. |
