As part of our Residential Life Continuing Conversations Series on social justice issues, Cornell Woodson ’09 will be our featured speaker on Thursday April 7th, 2016 at 8:00 – 9:30 PM in Textor 103.

Developing Our Ally Identity: Why We Need You

When Harvey Milk uttered his famous line, “I am here to recruit you”, he was talking about allyship. This call to action reflects the fact that in order to eradicate the social issues that plague our society, we need everyone! With the on-going and fast-paced way news is shared today, many people are asking themselves: what is my role? How can I make a difference? This workshop is designed to be highly conversational as we reflect on the various ways we can impact society in our own spheres of influence. If you are ready for action or thinking about ways to inspire change, then this workshop is for you.

Woodson has spent his career in education working with underrepresented groups and developing social justice initiatives to engage communities in tough conversations about the social issues that impact society. He worked for the Atlanta Public Schools teaching ninth through twelfth grade English; the University of Vermont in leadership development; and New York University as a program administrator before returning to the Ithaca area, where he earned his B.S. in communication management and design from Ithaca College in 2009. He also earned an M.Ed with an emphasis on social justice from the University of Vermont in 2013. He is currently the Associate Director for Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University.

As Residential Life staff, we believe bringing Cornell Woodson back to Ithaca College would not only start conversations but continue a dialogue to discuss the importance of understanding, willingness, and awareness of unseen multicultural issues are often overlooked. By continuing this dialogue, we can address ongoing issues on campus and be the catalyst for the change that is needed. This event is for residents on campus but open to all students, staff, and faculty.
