Understanding Privilege and Microaggressions Workshop with Kirby Edmonds and Laura Branca: Counts towards the D&I Training Requirement. Two dates available!Contributed by Michelle Rios-Dominguez on 04/19/16 Workshop Description: Privilege is a concept with many meanings. Some privileges can be bought; some may be earned through one’s profession, office, or be awarded upon admission to an institution, club or society. This workshop will focus on the kinds of unearned privilege that are afforded on the basis of belonging to included social identity groups. Prerequisite: Participants must have already attended Moving Toward Cultural Competency Workshop in order to attend. Through interactive exercises, presentation and discussion, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how privilege works in included identities, how it affects interpersonal interactions across included and excluded identities, and ideas about what people can do to move towards greater equity. Microaggressions are exclusionary, devaluing verbal and non-verbal behaviors that are unacknowledged and often unconscious expressions of bias toward others. One of the privileges that results in microaggressions is the cultural permission given to people in included groups to express devaluing, insulting, dismissive or fear-based attitudes without even necessarily being aware of doing so. This workshop will explore examples of what that looks like across identities, what impedes communication and acknowledgment, ways to reduce the incidence of micro-aggressions here at IC and ways to cope and heal from the injury inflicted by micro-aggressions. Goals: Dates/Times:
