A Ph.D. candidate in history at Rutgers University, Raechel Lutz explores in her essay the visual, historical, and scientific significance of a famous mural from the 1939 New York World's Fair.

"Still Life with Vitamins: Art and Science at the 1939 World's Fair" argues that Witold Gordon's mural on Food Building #3 helps us understand a historical moment when "nutritional science was becoming an important way of understanding the relationship between food and health." Raechel is working on a dissertation that examines the toxic legacy of Standard Oil in northeast New Jersey.  As part of this work she has been awarded an Allington Fellowship with the Chemical Heritage Foundation.  She can be reached at rlutz@history.rutgers.edu
