Ithaca College Theatre will kick off the 2016-2017 season with one of Federico Garcia Lorca’s best-known tragedies, “Blood Wedding”: a tale of deception, yearning, and vengeance. Full of song and chant, this poetic play is an exploration of the tension between individual desires and societal expectations in 20th-century Spain. The fall musical will be “Company” by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth. Robert is turning 35 and he’s still single, much to the dismay of his supportive, married friends. This Tony award–winning musical marries an exciting score with an in-depth look at the complicated choices people face. The season of the winter solstice inspires IC faculty choreographers to put bodies in motion as the world turns toward long nights and inner light. The December dance concert, “Winter Bodies,” will be choreographed by Lindsay Gilmour, Amy Walker O’Brien, and Courtney Young. Mozart created “La Clemenza di Tito” when commissioned to write an opera to celebrate the 1791 coronation of the Holy Roman emperor Leopold II. This opera seria’s magnificent score portrays a generous ruler caught in a web of jealousy and revenge. The spring musical, Mark Blitzstein’s “The Cradle Will Rock,” premiered in 1937 amid controversy. Society continues to play and replay its story today: the clash between the business mogul and those seeking equitable treatment for workers. Playwright Aphra Behn, the first Englishwoman to make her living as a professional writer, uses “The Rover” to reveal the hopes and hypocrisies of love, sex, and marriage. Though written in 1677, IC Theatre’s production of The Rover will be set during Mardi Gras in modern New Orleans. Masquerades, mishaps, and love triangles abound when lustful men woo cunning women. Information about show dates and times is available here. Ithaca College Theatre student/youth subscription packages start at $30 and include all six shows of the season.
