Do you have what it takes to be a mentor? Sign up for the Urban Mentorship Initiative (UMI)Contributed by Belisa Gonzalez on 08/25/16 Program Description: The Urban Mentorship Initiative (UMI) is a distance-mentoring program where students from Ithaca College are matched with seventh grade students from MS50 located in Brooklyn, NY. In this year-long program, mentors and mentees communicate through both structured and unstructured interactions via email and in-person meetings. Mentors and mentees participate in three required in-person meetings. For more information on the program take a look at our Promo Video. Class component:In order to be involved in UMI students need to sign-up, audit or attend the class CSCR/SOCI 30500 (CRN 23709 or 23708), Practicum in Social Change. The class meets Tuesdays from 4-5:15 in Williams 302. In this course we explore the relationship between educational inequality and social change. The course is a vital component to the experiential aspects of the program outlined above. Although the course is restricted to Juniors and Seniors, Sophomores will be given overrides. This class counts for the Policy and Praxis area for all CSCRE minors and the Social Change designation for Sociology majors.
