Hello campus community – I am pleased to join Dr. Roger Richardson in announcing some of the programming that will take place on our campus as we start our fall semester. This list is just the start, and there will be additional programming focused on diversity and inclusion throughout the fall. We also want to remind you about the upcoming Campus Climate Survey, which will be open from September 27 to October 28, and encourage you to participate in that important endeavor. Campus Gathering: Let's Talk Over Food This gathering is meant to provide members of the campus community (students, faculty, staff and administrators) an opportunity to come together to share food and conversation about the difficult and violent national and world events that have taken place this summer. If you plan to attend, please RSVP so the event organizers have a sense of how many people are coming. Diversity and Inclusion Discussion Panel This question-and-answer session will allow the campus community to discuss and learn more about diversity and inclusion efforts on campus. Panelists will be: Dr. Roger Richardson, interim chief diversity officer; Dr. Wade Pickren, director of our Center for Faculty Excellence; Terri Stewart, director of Public Safety; Dr. Brian Dickens, vice president of Human Resources; and Mary Knapp from DIIS. Dr. Sean Eversley Bradwell will moderate. "The New Jim Crow" Community Read Kick-Off Ithaca's Multicultural Resource Center is hosting a community book read of "The New Jim Crow" by Michelle Alexander. The book takes a hard look at the modern system of mass incarceration in the United States. This kick-off event takes place off campus, and all are invited to attend, but additional programming will be facilitated on campus for IC students, faculty, and staff. Contact Dr. Sean Eversley Bradwell for additional information and book requests. "Whistling Vivaldi" Campus Book Read A campus-wide book read of "Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do" by social psychologist Claude M. Steele, open to the entire campus community. The book examines stereotypes and explores ways to mitigate and reshape American identities. This event will be facilitated by Nicole and Sean Eversley Bradwell, and the book group will convene every other Friday through the end of November. For additional information and to receive a copy of the book, contact Dr. Sean Eversley Bradwell. 2nd Annual Symposia on Inclusion, Cultural Fluency, and Global Citizenship This year's symposia will kick-off with a presentation by Dr. Aziz Rana of the Cornell School of Law titled “Black Internationalism and the Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement.” After the event, discussion will be facilitated by a panel of faculty members. Additional symposia events will take place in October and November. ---- Doc Richardson and I encourage you to regularly check the D&I Events Calendar for information on additional programs. These include the LGBTQ Center Out of the Closet Film Series; LatinX Heritage Month events; CSCRE Discussion Series Events and much more.
