Director Catherine Wiedner ’85 brings this 1970s Broadway classic up to speed for the 21st Century. “Company” is being musically directed by Christopher Zemliauskas ’97, and will feature choreography by National Broadway Tour veteran, Tucker Davis. Set in New York City, “Company” follows Robert (or Bobby) as he finds out what it means to be the last single person standing among his circle of friends. In a series of musical vignettes, Bobby learns and reflects upon marriage, commitment and his past and present relationships. Under the mentorship of Assistant Professor Walter Chon, 16 student dramaturgs performed research about “Company” to support IC Theatre’s production. Says Chon, “The musical ‘Company’ was written in 1970 as a collaboration between composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim and playwright George Furth. At the time, Sondheim’s previous credits included the lyrics for ‘West Side Story’ (1957) and ‘Gypsy’ (1959). ‘Company’ was Sondheim’s first Broadway hit as a composer, winning him his first two Tony Awards—Best Score and Best Lyrics. The original production of ‘Company’ was directed by the legendary director/producer Harold Prince and choreographed by Michael Bennett, who went on to direct and choreograph the original production of ‘A Chorus Line’ (1975). The partnership between Sondheim and Prince continued in ‘Merrily We Roll Along’ (1981) and marked the beginning of post-Golden Age Broadway musicals.” Ithaca College’s production design team includes scenic designer Jennifer Hiyama ’17, costume designer Lia Maynard ’17, lighting designer Eric Mitchell ’17 and sound designer Don Tindall.
