As the fall 2016 semester reaches its final weeks, we recognize that this semester has challenged students’ feelings of personal and emotional safety in numerous ways. As one of many offices at the College working to support student well-being, the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management would like to share a reminder of the various safety and education resources we have available to our community.
- Individuals walking on campus who feel unsafe at any time can contact Public Safety to request a travel escort. Please do not hesitate to request this service if you feel unsafe or if having this added sense of security helps to make you more comfortable. We will always provide this support upon request. Reach out to Public Safety at 607-274-3333 and we will have a Public Safety officer or Student Auxiliary Safety Patrol member available to travel with you to your destination as soon as possible.
- Blue light phones are available throughout campus. While students typically view these phones as an emergency reporting tool, it is very acceptable to use them as a contact point to Public Safety to request any kind of assistance or support, not just emergency response. If you are feeling unsafe out on campus, or see something you feel it is important to report, the blue light phones are a good resource to utilize.
- The Public Safety website offers a variety of educational resources and safety recommendations. You can access these informational resources at www.ithaca.edu/sacl/safety/crimepreventionprogram, as well as learn more about safety programming available for request from Public Safety.
- While Public Safety is a key resource for many campus safety concerns, we recognize that specific problems or student needs may make another campus resource feel like the best contact point. Students seeking mental health support can contact the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services at 607-274-3136. Faculty and staff can speak to a counselor through the Employee Assistance Program at 1-800-327-2255. For instances of harassment or discrimination based on gender or sexual identify, Title IX Coordinator Tiffani Ziemann can be contacted at tdziemann@ithaca.edu.
As always, for any additional questions or concerns you can reach Public Safety staff 24/7 at 607-274-3333. We welcome your communications about any support or resources we can offer, and also continue to appreciate your assistance in reporting any safety or security concerns you experience or witness so that we can provide the appropriate guidance, follow-up, and support.
