New section of a CA perspective course in the Inquiry, Imagination, and Innovation ThemeContributed by Jennifer Jolly on 11/27/16 One section of a newly designated CA perspective course is open for enrollment this spring. Professor Lyons will offer ARTH 27550 Islamic Art and Architecture on MWF at 11:00 am. It will address the Inquiry, Imagination, and Innovation and Identities themes of the ICC. Course description: A survey of the art and architecture produced in Muslim lands from Central Asia to Spain between the seventh and thirteenth centuries. The course emphasizes the role of arts in the formation and expression of cultural identity, exploring painting, sculpture, architecture, and smaller, portable arts, including ceramics, ivory, metalwork, and illuminated manuscripts. Topics of discussion include the uses of figural and non-figural imagery, calligraphy and ornament, religious and secular art, public and private art, the art of the court, the art of the urban middle class, as well as the status, function, and meaning of the portable arts. |
