New section of a SS perspective course in the Inquiry, Imagination, and Innovation AND World of Systems ThemesContributed by David Brown on 11/28/16 One section of a SS perspective course is open for enrollment this spring. Professor Weinberg will offer MATH 15300, Mathematics as a Cultural Institution, on TR from 1:10-2:25 PM. It will address the Inquiry, Imagination, and Innovation AND World of Systems themes of the ICC. The goal of this course is to reflect on and find your own answer to the questions “What is Mathematics?” and “How does it function as a cultural system?” We will, as a class, investigate the nature of mathematics by experiencing, reading about, and discussing several aspects of mathematical thinking and learning. We will use ideas from philosophy, psychology, history, sociology, and biology to explore and gain insight into math as it has developed historically, as it is taught in schools, and as it is used in society. |
