Native Heritage: 1st Peoples Month

Contributed by RahK Lash on 11/30/16

The Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs would like to thank the Ithaca College and local Ithaca, NY community for supporting Native Heritage: 1st Peoples Month at IC this year. Each event was successful in offering a challenging and transformative experience through dialogue on cultural appropriation, representation in media, gender, historical inaccuracies, and the intersection of identities.

This year’s programming included

  •  “Reel Injun” Film Screening and Dialogue
  • “Indian" Season: Cultural Appropriation, Popular Culture, and Racializing Native Peoples” talk with Dr. Michael Taylor (CSCRE)
  •  “Re-Thinking Thanksgiving: A Native American Perspective” with Perry Ground (Onondaga, Turtle Clan)
  • “Of Land & Bodies: Gendering Colonization, Decolonizing the Indigenous Imagination” with Dr. Hayley Cavino (Syracuse University)

Through the collaborative efforts of the Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs, our campus partners in various departments and offices, and our student organizations, we are able to provide various opportunities to learn, share, celebrate, empower, and appreciate Latinx Heritage Month, Native Heritage: 1st Peoples Month, Black History Month, and Focus Asia Month.
