Every January, the Ithaca College community celebrates the life, legacy, and messages of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through a series of programs and events sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement & Multicultural Affairs (OSEMA).

Back in 2008, when the first day of classes fell on the national holiday, IC President Emerita Peggy Williams declared the first day of classes as a "Day on, not Off." The day is celebrated as a day of reflection and celebration with programs and activities in lieu of classroom instruction. During years where the holiday falls before the first day of classes, the campus community spends the first week of classes engaging in discussions, viewing films, attending a keynote speaker event, participating and volunteering in community service projects, and more.

This tradition will continue January 23-28, 2017, as students, staff, faculty, and community members commune to discuss the legacy and work of Rev. Dr. King, Jr. This year's theme is "The Ultimate Weakness of Violence"  which is a concept taken from King's last book, "Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?"

Save the dates! MLK Week 2017! Comment from rosentha on 12/12/16
In the years when Martin Luther King Day fell right before classes started on Tuesday, I have been struck that student parking lots have been incredibly empty and as a result I suspect there has been poor attendance at MLK day events. I hope that attendance is better for MLK week on campus when MLK day is a week before classes start. And if so, I would urge adopting that "model" all years, that is, holding classes even on MLK day and having events throughout the first week of classes.
