The Ithaca College Gerontology Institute provides high quality education to students and professionals, empowering them to positively impact the lives of older people. Registration is required, visit www.ithaca.edu/agingworkshops/regfacstaffstufall16/ All workshops are held at the Country Inn and Suites, 1100 Danby Road (Route 96B), Ithaca, NY The BREATH Pathway: Mindfulness Practices for Veterans Tuesday, February 7 Presenter: Janice Elich Monroe, Ph.D., Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies, Ithaca College The BREATH Pathway is designed to aid in the recognition and elimination of stressors and the development of coping strategies. The pathway involves the role of breath patterns, response-ability, environment, awareness, thankfulness and habits in enhancing an individual’s quality of life. This session will be experiential and will provide an overview of the BREATH Pathway and strategies of how it can be implemented in your own life or in your professional interventions. Elder Abuse: Prevalence, Process, and Prevention Tuesday, March 21 Presenters: This workshop will provide an overview of elder abuse. Part 1 of the workshop will include current state and national aging and elder abuse demographics, overview of the types of elder abuse, elder abuse reporting, and factors that put elders at risk for elder abuse. Part 2 will include statistics for Tompkins County, the referral process for Adult Protective Services (APS), how the case evolves from initial opening to closing, other community resources APS works with to assist clients, and the barriers that APS offices have when working with clients and solving some of the issues facing a vulnerable elderly population. Part 3 will address elder abuse prevention and intervention strategies. The Nurse’s Perspective Tuesday, April 11 Presenters: This workshop includes a panel of three experienced local nurses, who will offer their unique perspectives, and practical lessons on caring and advocating for the elder population. The material will cover critical care of the geriatric patient, rehabilitation and quality of life, and emergency planning and accident prevention for advanced age.
