Notice to Campus Community Regarding Severe Weather ForecastContributed by David Maley on 01/23/17 With a winter storm forecast to impact the region over the next 24 hours, we wanted to let the campus community know that college officials are closely monitoring the situation and will be consulting with local law enforcement agencies and other local employers, as needed. As noted in the Ithaca College Policy Manual, weather conditions, no matter how extreme, normally will not close the college when classes are in session. Any announcement of a change in the college’s operating status will be made via the Emergency Notification System (ENS), posted on the college’s website and on the Emergency Hotline (274-1495), and distributed to local media outlets. As per the policy manual, employees are expected to work their normal hours unless the college is officially closed. A supervisor may not unilaterally decide to close a department. However, there are times when the college is not officially closed, but when conditions make it appropriate for a supervisor to be flexible in allowing employees to depart from their normal schedules. Employees who miss time because of late arrival, early departure, or absence due to inclement weather or other special condition may choose to make up the time, use personal or vacation time, or have a reduced paycheck if there are no accruals to use. Members of the campus community are strongly urged to sign up for the ENS, which uses voice, e-mail, and text messaging to reach staff, faculty, and students with time-sensitive information. It is important to have more than one way to receive alerts in order to ensure access to emergency notices. It takes one full day for additions/revisions to ENS contact information to take effect. To sign up or to update your existing ENS information, go to the Emergency Notification System website. More information about emergency closing policies and procedures can be found in the Ithaca College Policy Manual. Notice to Campus Community Regarding Severe Weather Forecast Comment from

Perhaps it's time to amend the policy manual, then. Insisting on keeping the college open in hazardous conditions --even when the city of Ithaca has closed down public transport-- endangers the lives of IC employees. Is there no one paying any attention to policies that are patently absurd?

I agree,I really think that the college needs to think of the safety of every one.Every ones lives matter.

We all have a personal responsibility for our own safety. For non-exempt employees, the generous option of making up time lost gives balance to the policy. In the case of an instructor missing a class due to not being able to get to campus, how is that different from having to compensate for canceling class due to unanticipated illness or travel delays upon returning from a conference?
Thanks to modern technology, we have the ability to prepare ourselves for an impending storm. Given that and considering that we have students who reside on campus to consider when classes are in session, the policy is fair and reasonable as written. |
