Monday, February 13th, 2017, 7:00pm, Klingenstein Lounge, Campus Center Activists on Activists connects current students with local (NY State) social change agents for the opportunity to bring dialogue around continued action and advocacy post-undergraduate experience. “I believed that poetry gave me the outlet to voice an opinion and perspective that was different from the perspective I have been forced to play on stage and film.”
Drew Drake, is a New York City local performing artist who has traveled the world. Drew’s recent project “The Soulfood Sessions: A Poetry Mixtape” is his first collection of work that addresses issues varying from veteran rights, the impact of capitalism and racism on college athletics, inherent fears, faith, and the ongoing journey of self-love. His next project entitled “Family Business” is his first print collection, addressing the relationship between Blackness, Black families, and popular culture, is set to be released in July 2017.
Drew received his BFA in Theatre from Western Carolina University (2012). In 2013 he received a full ride scholarship and fellowship to become a MFA candidate focusing on Theatre performance at the University of Tennessee. He has performed his poetry in many venues throughout the US, and competed in National Poetry Slams (Louisville SoulSpit finalist, Asheville Battle for I-40 2nd place, Nuyorican Poets Café semifinalist, Bowery Poetry Slam, Greenville 2014 Poetic Expression 3rd place) and Southern Fried Poetry Slam multiple times.
