Ithaca College is in contract negotiations with two bargaining units represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU)— one for part-time, per course faculty and the other for full-time contingent faculty who have year-to-year contracts. There are currently two more negotiation sessions scheduled for February 21 and 24. The college’s bargaining team will be proposing additional meeting dates, if needed, to continue negotiations. While the college believes there has been significant progress to date, the union has announced that members of both bargaining units recently voted to authorize their leaders to call a strike at some point if talks with the part-time bargaining units do not result in agreements. Because of the possibility of a labor action, the college has been receiving inquiries about the status of the negotiations and the potential impact of a strike on the Ithaca College community. A set of frequently asked questions was created to address common concerns. Additional questions will be added and the content will be updated on a regular basis. In the event of a strike, messages will be sent directly to students, faculty, staff, parents, and others with more details about college operations. Dear Ithaca College Administration,
Speaking for myself as a member of the tenured faculty here at Ithaca College, I sincerely hope that the college can make more efforts to meet the contingent faculty union on the two most important issues of pay parity and timing of appointment notices. I support the union, and I hope that my community can peacefully and fairly work through this final step together. I urge the college to be progressive on pay parity and to fully explain why the timing of appointment notices is a very complex issue. Sincerely, Beth Ellen Clark Joseph Professor |
