As students prepare to depart campus for spring break, the Office of Public Safety and Emergency Management would like to provide a reminder of the the importance of securing personal possessions before departing.  Break periods are typically one of the peak times for campus thefts as individuals are less present to monitor their property and residential spaces, and recognition and reporting of thefts may be delayed by absence from campus.

Before leaving for the break, remember to secure or bring along valuables, move high-value property out of plain view, and close and lock all windows, screen doors, room doors, etc.  Key property to focus on removing or securing may include cash, electronics, musical instruments, and wallets/purses.  Do not post messages on your door giving a clear date and time when you will be returning as individuals can use that information to plan unauthorized entry to your space.  If possible, document your high-value property with a record of serial numbers, proof of ownership, identifying marks, etc.

If you have any additional questions about break safety or strategies for protecting your personal property, please contact Public Safety any time at 607-274-3333.
