Ithaca College CSTEP participant Venique Clarke ‘17 participated in the 2017 Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) Winter CSTEP Mini-Course from January 9-13th. Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multipurpose research institution funded primarily by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. The Ithaca College Collegiate Science Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), operated under the Office of State Grants (OSG) supports historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged groups from New York State who are pursuing professional licensure and careers in mathematics, science, engineering, technology, and health-related STEM fields.

Selected CSTEP students were invited to participate in the five-day program conducted by BNL researchers. This highly selective program exposed students to the wide range of research projects conducted at BNL, different pathways to scientific careers, and allowed them to develop networking opportunities with the BNL scientific community and administrators. The program included classroom instruction, communication workshops, tours of research facilities and scientific lectures. Student participants delivered presentations regarding their BNL experiences at the Winter Mini-Course Closing Ceremony.

Located on the center of Long Island, New York, Brookhaven Lab brings world-class facilities and expertise to the most exciting and important questions in basic and applied science. Brookhaven National Laboratory partners with the New York State Education Department’s CSTEP Programs to offer students participation in BNL programs that introduce modern day science through science and technology exploration. The IC CSTEP director, Dr. Orlando Kittrell, serves on the APACS (CSTEP)-BNL committee. For information on APACS or CSTEP at BNL.

OSG provides intrusive academic support services to eligible Ithaca College students participating in the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP), the Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (CSTEM) program and the Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP). The Ithaca College CSTEP and HEOP programs are funded in part through the Office of Postsecondary Access, Support and Success (OPASS) at the New York State Department of Education.
