Mara Alper's documentary video art "Rising" was selected for screening in Ethnografilm Paris in April. "Rising" is a poetic documentary short evoking the Bali Hindu religion honoring fire, water and air. These reflect the three Tri Hita Karana philosophy for well-being on Bali -- harmony among people, harmony with nature, harmony with God. Mara is currently in Bali continuing her research on water rituals in religions and daily life.

Ethnografilm accepts non-fiction film genres that promote the systematic understanding of the social world through film. Marked by its contemporary relevance and broad intellectual range, the purpose of Ethnografilm is to understand society, culture, and social issues. The festival serves as a showcase and forum for dialog between independent and academic filmmakers. It screens in Paris, Africa, Asia, and New Orleans.     The festival is co-sponsored by the International Social Science Council (ISSC) and the Society for Social Studies of Science (4S) and collaborates with the University Film and Video Association.
