Want to analyze movies and learn about religion at the same time? This Special Topics religious studies course introduces students to the ways that religion is reflected within film, as well as the ways that film itself can work like religion. We look at films that cover religious traditions from around the world, and practice the techniques of filmic analysis while thinking about how meaning-making is accomplished through things like lighting, editing, symbolism, framing, and story. The professor has years of experience in the field of religion and film, and the class will be small and seminar-based. This course is 300 level and requires one course in religion, but the professor will provide an override for those students with a previous course in theater, communications, visual arts, or any course dealing with religion. |
