The IC Medieval and Renaissance Colloquium announces a presentation by Dan Brayton, Professor of English at Middlebury College, today, April 28th, at 5:30 p.m. in the Clark Lounge, campus center.  All with an interest in Shakespeare, the English Renaissance, and environmental issues in literature are welcome.

Professsor Brayton's topic is "Shakespeare's Fish Ponds:  Matter, Metaphor, and Ecology."  The presentation will be a contextual reading of Shakespeare’s metaphorical references to fish ponds, with particular attention to King Lear and The Winter’s Tale, looking closely at several dazzling yet obscure passages that reveal a complex set of cultural associations between fish, land ownership, and sexuality.

Professor Brayton is a leading ecocritic —a literary critic focusing on the significance of environmental representations in literature —whose most recent book is Shakespeare's Ocean: An Ecocritical Exploration (University of Virginia Press, 2012).
