"Crooked" will take the Earl McCarroll Studio Theatre stage on April 29th at 8pm. Performances continue April 30th and May 1st at 8pm with a matinee performance at 2pm on April 29th. "Crooked" is directed by Chiara Hollender ’17.

"Crooked" tells the story of Laney and her mother, Elise, after they move from Madison, Wisconsin to southern, conservative, and narrow-minded Oxford, Mississippi. Laney befriends Maribel Purdy, a naïve, yet strongly religious girl who challenges both Laney’s and Elise’s world view. In Oxford, Laney embarks on a spiritual and sexual journey which brings her, and the audience, up against questions surrounding ableism, sexuality, gender, race, and religion.

Tickets for "Crooked" are free but reservations are required. To reserve tickets e-mail icstudio2tam@gmail.com beginning Monday, April 24th and indicate a first and second choice of performance date and time. All tickets are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and must be picked up at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start of the performance.

Director Hollender aimed to highlight the stories of the women in the play while telling the story of all women. She says, “Female artists are continually under- and misrepresented in our world today. I wanted to shed light on the true experience of the three women in 'Crooked.' In tandem with my Women and Gender Studies minor, this play acts as a vehicle to dive deeper into the female condition, and the ways in which women are marginalized, specifically in the play’s location of Oxford, Mississippi.”

Audiences are advised that this show contains implications of self-harm, on stage violence, and adult themes.

The cast of "Crooked" includes Lauren Rexach ’19, Jordan Pesci-Smith ’17, Julia Rach ’19, Nicole Morris ’20, and Christina Ruivivar ‘20. Sarah Powell ’19 is the assistant director. The creative team includes sound designer Ron Ziomek ’19, lighting designer Paul Vaillancourt ’18, scenic designer Jennifer Hiyama ’17, stage manager Kate Carolan ‘19, and assistant stage manager Lauren Zurovitch ’20.
